Understanding the Condition
WHAT IS PELVIC ORGAN PROLAPSE?
Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) occurs when one or more pelvic organs — bladder, uterus, or rectum — descend into or beyond the vaginal canal due to weakened pelvic floor and connective tissue support. It is graded I–IV by severity. PT is effective across all grades and is the primary treatment before surgical consideration for most cases.
Cystocele (Bladder Prolapse): The most common type. Bladder descends into the front wall of the vagina. Produces pressure, urinary symptoms, and incomplete emptying.
Rectocele (Rectal Prolapse): Rectum descends into the back wall of the vagina. Produces pressure and difficulty with bowel emptying.
Uterine Prolapse: The uterus descends into the vaginal canal. Grades I–IV. PT is first-line treatment for Grade I–II and an important adjunct for higher grades.
Prolapse in Active Women: Symptoms worsen with running, lifting, or high-impact exercise. PT teaches load management strategies and pelvic floor activation during activity — not just rest.
Treatment Approach
HOW WE TREAT IT
Prolapse PT focuses on optimizing the pelvic floor's support function, reducing symptom provocation during daily activity, and teaching the pressure management strategies that allow return to exercise.
01
Symptom Reduction & Education
Bowel and bladder habit optimization, load management strategies for daily activity, and beginning pelvic floor strengthening within symptom tolerance.
02
Pelvic Floor Strengthening
Progressive pelvic floor strengthening with correct breathing mechanics and intra-abdominal pressure management. This is what reduces the prolapse burden over time.
03
Return to Exercise
Graded return to running, lifting, and high-impact activity with strategies that minimize prolapse provocation and maintain pelvic floor support under load.
Typical Timeline8–12 weeks for significant symptom improvement. Ongoing strengthening is beneficial long-term.
