If you had COVID and never fully recovered, you know the experience is difficult to explain to people who haven’t been through it. The fatigue isn’t like being tired after a long day. The brain fog isn’t like having an off morning. These symptoms are real, persistent, and not responding to rest the way normal illness does.
What the research suggests is happening
Several research groups have identified microclots in the blood of long COVID patients, tiny fibrin deposits that may be restricting blood flow to peripheral tissue. Others have found evidence of mitochondrial dysfunction, essentially a problem with how cells generate energy. And there’s consistent evidence of persistent systemic inflammation. The common thread is that these are not problems you can rest your way out of. The cellular machinery itself is affected.
Why HBOT fits the physiology
HBOT at 2.0 ATA increases oxygen delivery to tissue significantly beyond what normal breathing achieves. At the cellular level, this may support mitochondrial function, help resolve microclot-associated ischemia by promoting angiogenesis, and trigger the M2 macrophage response that supports resolution of the persistent inflammatory state.
What the emerging research shows
Several clinical studies have examined HBOT for long COVID, with results that are genuinely encouraging. Improvements in cognitive function, fatigue, sleep quality, and exercise tolerance have been documented in multiple trials. The mechanistic explanation for why it works makes physiological sense. We’re honest with every patient about what we know and what we don’t. But the evidence to date is strong enough that we consider it a legitimate option for long COVID patients who haven’t improved with standard approaches.
If you’re in North County and have been dealing with long COVID symptoms, come in for a consultation. We’ll tell you honestly whether we think HBOT makes sense for your situation.
